Westgate Vision Engagement

The proponents of LOVEDROGHEDA believe that the future prosperity and well being of Drogheda City is very much dependent on the ability of its people to work together. Many of the projects we are proposing are dependent on groups of people in Drogheda coming together and collaborating.

It is a proven fact that towns and cities that collaborate, are economically and socially vibrant, attract inward investment and funding, are progressive and places that people want to make home.

Many of the projects proposed will involve the BID company and rate payers working together with many organisations in Drogheda and collaborating to make the projects happen. This means conducting business in a positive, respectful and constructive manner.

Launched by the then Mayor of Drogheda, Councillor Pio Smith in June 2018 Westgate Vision is Louth County Council’s urban design vision for the regeneration of the Westgate Area of Drogheda, with particular focus on Narrow West Street and its environs and aims to channel investment into the core area of the town. Cllr Smith said at the event ‘Drogheda, like many other towns across the country, witnessed rapid expansion of new housing and commercial areas outside the traditional town centre in the early 2000s. At the same time, this saw areas like Westgate and Narrow West Street at the western extremity of the town centre lose their appeal for residents and businesses, resulting in current high levels of vacancy, under-utilisation, and dereliction. Visitors to the Boyne Valley use Westgate as their entry point to the town and it is vital that we create a sense of arrival into the historic Drogheda town.

It is anticipated that the Westgate vision will take 10 years to be delivered, in 3 stages to include repairing prominent buildings, shop front improvements, soft landscaping to public areas ad facilitating pedestrian access through Old Abbey Lane to Narrow West street. Love DroghedaBIDS have engaged with Louth County Council continuously with regards to the Westgate Vision and made submissions on behalf of the business community.
