The heart of Drogheda came alive on Friday evening as thousands gathered to celebrate the Christmas Light Switch-On, marking the official start of the festive season. Delivered by Love Drogheda BID, Drogheda Credit Union and Louth County Council, this spectacular event brought the community together in a joyful celebration of light, music, and holiday spirit.
Families and friends filled the streets, enjoying an array of activities that included face painting, light performances, and magical picture opportunities, creating a festive buzz across the town. Adding to the event were performances by three talented primary schools, the elegant dancers of Coastal Ballet, and Star Academy, and the beloved Drogheda Brass Band. Each act brought a unique flair to the evening, leaving the audience captivated and thoroughly entertained.
The highlight of the event came when Santa Claus himself, joined by Mayor Paddy McQuillan and two delighted local children, took center stage to switch on the Christmas lights. As the town lit up in a stunning display, the crowd erupted in cheers, marking a truly magical moment for Drogheda.
“We’re thrilled to see such an incredible turnout,” said Sarah Taaffe, Chairperson of Love Drogheda BID. “This event is all about bringing our community together, and we’re so grateful to Drogheda Credit Union and Louth County Council for their support in making it possible. The performances from our local talent were outstanding, and we couldn’t have asked for a better way to kick off the Christmas season”. The final message from Mayor Paddy McQuillan was, "to take the opportunity this Christmas to Shop Local, support local businesses, to get in and meet friends in town for a coffee or an ice cream and make Drogheda your number one destination this Christmas".
The event served as a reminder of the spirit of Drogheda’s community, providing a perfect opportunity for the people of the town to connect and celebrate.
As the town sparkles with festive lights, Drogheda is now ready to welcome visitors and residents alike for a Christmas season filled with warmth, cheer, and magic.
