Author Dave Rudden and local actor and raconteur extraordinaire Gráinne Rafferty join forces with RTÉ Con Tempo Quartet for a supernatural journey through the streets of Drogheda with a classical twist!
The Spirits of the Restless Dead, The Haunting of the Tholsel, The Lady of the Boyne, and other scary stories will feature alongside the RTÉ Con Tempo Quartet as they play some of the most spine-tingling tunes in classical music by composers such as Franz Schubert and Bella Bartók at a special Halloween concert in St. Peter’s Church of Ireland on 1 November entitled Spirts and Spectres!
During the concert, which is presented by Drogheda Classical Music the Lú Festival of Light and Droichead Arts Centre, The Con Tempo Quartet quartet will also be joined by author of the Knights of the Borrowed Dark trilogy Dave Rudden and local actor and famed story-teller Gráinne Rafferty who will regale patrons with some of the most famous gothic Drogheda folklore.
Artistic Administrator of Drogheda Classical Music, Dr Gavan Ring, says he is absolutely thrilled at the prospect of teaming up with the ever-innovative and exciting Lú Festival of Light.
“I was absolutely delighted when Drogheda Classical Music was approached to collaborate with the Lú Festival of Light” he said. “The festival is a massive high-water mark for cultural output and innovation in the area so it was a no-brainer for us to 100% jump at this opportunity.
“What we have come up with is so cool – merging local gothic folklore with some of the best and most atmospheric string quartet repertoire plus a stunning lighting installation by John McGovern will make this a multi-sensory feast for audiences on 1 November!”
Trevor Connolly from Love Drogheda is similarly thrilled at the prospect of this collaborative event: “We are delighted to welcome the development of new initiatives such as the new Spirits and Spectres performance which promises to be a wonderful piece that will bring local Drogheda folklore to life.
“This will add a touch of class to a growing programme of events that are happening over the Halloween period and will provide a wonderful experience for guests. We would like to convey our thanks to all those who have worked to compose and develop the piece.”
The Spirits & Spectres concert promises to be a genuinely exciting addition to the magic of the Lú Festival of Lights. This event showcases the incredible creativity in Drogheda and reflects Louth County Council’s commitment to supporting local organisations in bringing fresh, innovative ideas to life.
Once again, the partnership environment in Drogheda has helped bring this concept together and enhanced it. Spirits & Spectres captures the essence of both the town and the Lú Festival—celebrating our history and legends while highlighting the forward-thinking spirit of Drogheda.
This concert will take place at St Peter’s Church of Ireland; tickets €15 and available at www.droichead.com or by calling 041 9833 946.
