The enchanting spirit of Christmas will illuminate Drogheda as the community gathers for the much-anticipated Christmas Light Switch-On event in St. Peter's Plaza, West Street. Set to take place on Friday, November15th, from 5:30 PM to 7:15 PM, this festive celebration promises an evening of joy, music, and dazzling lights.
The event will feature a delightful line-up of entertainment, including performances by three primary school choirs, capturing the essence of the holiday season through the voices of the youngest members of our community. Adding a touch of magic, two mesmerizing dance performances wil lgrace the stage, bringing the wonder of the season to life.
Sarah Taaffe, Love Drogheda Chairperson said “A major theme for this year’s event is “Support Drogheda Businesses” with attendees encouraged to support the local businesses, not just on Friday night, by buying a hot chocolate from a cafe or having a celebratory meal out in a Drogheda restaurant but also by thinking of Drogheda businesses first as you make your way through your Christmas gift list. Drogheda has many wonderful businesses that could all use a little extra support this holiday season"
Drogheda Brass Band will open the celebrations with some festive music. The magic will continue as Drogheda Credit Union will again host their Christmas Jumper Competition taking place on the night. Prizes will begiven on the night for the ‘Most Jolly Jumper’, ‘Festive Family costume’ and spot prizes for most creative and cheery festive wear.
Joe McGuinness, Acting Chief Executive of Louth noted “Louth County Council is delighted to be one of the sponsors for the switch on of the Drogheda Christmas Lights again this year. The excitement on the faces of all those attending is truly wonderful, bringing light, colour and fun to Drogheda. I applaud the work of all involved, especially the Love Drogheda BIDS team, in creating this magical and charming event and encourage everyone to attend the light switch on event and see for themselves all there is to offer in Drogheda at this event and in the run up to Christmas”.
The entire community is invited to join in the festivities, share the warmth of the season, and witness the spectacular moment when the Christmas lights brighten the whole town of Drogheda, switched on by three lucky children who are winners of a colouring competition, with some help from Santa himself, of course.
Patricia White of Drogheda Credit Union noted the work that has gone into the event, “We are immensely proud to be part of this year’s Christmas Light Switch-On. Supporting this celebration reflects our commitment to being at the heart of our community. As the lights come on, illuminating West Street and lifting our spirits, we hope it serves as a reminder of the strength, unity, and joy within our great town. We look forward to celebrating with everyone, young and old, and making this season truly magical for all."
Road closures will be in place from 4pm on the day, with no traffic along West Street from the Stockwell Street junction to the Peters Street/Shop Street junction. Visitors are advised to make their way into town early and to expect delays and diversions in place.
