The second annual Drogheda Comedy Festival was launched at an event held in The Marcy Hotel last Thursday night. The festival, a partnership project between Drogheda’s Night-time Economy Advisor, Louth County Council, Love Drogheda BID and Avery Talent, as well as a steering group of local venues, returns to Drogheda from 7th to 9th of March and promises to bring some of Ireland’s top comedians to venues in town.
“Love Drogheda BID are delighted to be involved as a sponsor of this year’s Drogheda Comedy which will see some of the best Comedy Talent in Ireland and internationally visit the town and deliver great stand up in some of our wonderful venues. I would encourage everyone to go check out the line up and enjoy an evening of laughter in the town this March” Trevor Connolly, Love Drogheda BID CEO.
After the huge success of the first festival in 2024,the Drogheda Comedy Festival is back and bringing some of Ireland’s favorite comedians and new talent to venues around Drogheda, promising “unadulterated joy” and plenty of laughs. Comedians performing at the festival include “the outright king of comedy” Jason Byrne, Reginald D Hunter, Ladies who Drunch, Joe Rooney, Sinead Quinlan, Fred Cooke and much more dishing out three nights of laughs from 7th to 9th March. Tickets are on sale now at droghedacomedyfestival.ie.
Mark Davies, Night-time Economy Advisor for Drogheda stated “I’m absolutely delighted to see Drogheda Comedy Festival return after being a part of it last year—and at a time when the town needed some positive news. Drogheda really is made for an event like this. It brings its own edgy, electric energy, right in the heart of a town where you can drift between authentic pubs, punky events, and raw, real comedy. Drogheda’s greatest asset is its people—welcoming, sharp, and up for the craic. Huge credit to the venues, Louth County Council, Love Drogheda BID, and Aviary Talent for proving that this town is the perfect place for proper, gritty stand-up. Events like this don’t just entertain—they show Drogheda is a place worth investing in, a town full of life and possibility”.
The launch of the festival comes as Drogheda celebrates receiving its Purple Flag accreditation, a recognition of the town’s commitment to creating a dynamic, secure and vibrant evening and night-time economy. The Purple Flag-similar to the Blue Flag accreditation for beaches-aims to raise the standard and broaden the appeal of town and city centers between the hours of 5pm and 5am. This prestigious award highlights Drogheda’s blend of entertainment, dining and culture, add while ensuring the safety and well-being of residents and visitors in the evening and night-time economy.
“The Purple Flag is an industry vote of confidence in Drogheda. It shows we are on the right path when it comes to delivering a vibrant entertainment and hospitality sector but it's all about collaboration. The more people and groups rooting for our town, the more sustainable and brighter our future will be. The destiny of our town is in our hands. We must grasp it” stated Hubert Murphy, Chairperson of the Drogheda Purple Flag group.
Key successes in Drogheda’s submission include the emphasis on enhancing non-alcohol-based evening activities, like the Lú Festival of Lights and Busk at Dusk, the impressive culinary offer in the town, with new street food pop-ups, and the strong sense of momentum, fuelled in part by the growth of partnerships over the past year.
